The new business journey

What do you do when the sat nav takes you to a private cul de sac of 5-bedroom detached homes instead of the organisation you’re visiting?

You’d have thought that approaching a taxi driver for some urgent assistance would be a good move, but you have to worry when they take out their A-Z from the glove box – let alone a magnifying glass to read it…

So instead you persevere with the sat nav, ignoring her instruction every 30 seconds to turn around as soon as you can, whilst your business partner is relaying information from the staff back at base with no seat-belt on (after taxi driver debacle) resulting in a bleeping so rapid you’d think the car was about to self-destruct…

What you do is get a big, sickening headache – and leap on a pedestrian who at least points us in the right direction.

As luck would have it we’d set off in good time so arrived on time despite our various detours. Better still the meeting went well (which eased the headache), our prospect was engaged, appeared genuinely interested in our suggestions and recommendations. Having said that, it wasn’t without a momentary panic. We’d been asked to take some costings to the meeting following telephone conversations and various email exchanges. However it became clear once we'd completed our probing about the organisation that his requests over the phone really weren’t the right course of action anymore.

20+ years on and it's still worth being reminded that unless the brief is absolutely watertight you really need a face-to-face to get under the skin of the business before talking substance - sat nav permitting.
